Make Kids Count: The Day Care Council of New York’s Census Project

We are pleased to announce that the Day Care Council of New York (DCCNY) has received a grant from the NYC Complete Count Fund — a partnership between CUNY, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City Council. The NYC Complete Count Fund is a community organizing program that supports community-based organizations to help NYC reach a full and accurate count in the 2020 Census.

The goal of DCCNY’s census project is to ensure that every child under the age of five and their families served by DCCNY’s member agencies are counted in the 2020 Census.

DCCNY is proud to join this coordinated citywide effort to build awareness about the census, convey its importance, fight the spread of mis- and disinformation, and help bridge the digital divide that might prevent many New Yorkers from participating in the census.

The Census is:
Safe
Easy
Important

Did you know that children under the age of 5 are one of the most underccounted populations?

  • 70,000 children under 5 years old in NYC were not counted in the 2010 Census.
  • Over 1 million children were not counted in the census nationwide.
  • When kids aren’t counted on the Census, we lose funding!
  • NYC lost out on $18 million in funding over the past 10 years for our kids.
  • Crucial programs like SNAP, WIC, Head Start, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) depend on an accurate count of children.
  • There is $675 billion in federal funding at stake.
  • The Census is protected by law – no one, not your employer, not your landlord, not ICE or the IRS, can access your Census information.
  • There is no citizenship question on the Census!
  • How do I fill out the Census?

  • The Census can be filled out online, by paper, or over the phone.
  • Only some households received a paper form in the mail. Everyone else can fill the form out online or over the phone.
  • To fill out the Census online, go to http://wwww.my2020census.gov
